Fruit flies are unwelcome guests in our homes that can be challenging to get rid of. It can be difficult to prevent them from getting inside especially if we always keep our kitchen door or windows open. Fortunately, you can easily eliminate these pesky fruit flies with the help of a few items that you already have at home! Try these four tips to keep these fruit flies away from your kitchen and your food.
1. Keep Your Drains Clean
Your drains are where fruit flies tend to reproduce and breed. Keeping them clean will prevent these fruit flies from coming out. Make it a habit to clean your kitchen drains at least twice a week. You can clean it by pouring a one to one mixture of vinegar and boiling water down your kitchen drains.
2. Keep Your Kitchen Neat
You might be storing your food properly, but are you cleaning your stoves and kitchen countertops correctly? Make sure that you wipe them well because the oil and food residue left in these areas can easily attract fruit flies. To help you make them spotless, wipe your stovetops with mineral oil and use warm water and a gentle dish soap for your countertops.
3. Maximize Items in the Kitchen
With the help of lemons and spices, fruit flies will stay away from your kitchen. Slice a lemon in half and add clove spices to them. The smell will repel fruit flies right away. This is great for outdoor dinner parties to save you from shooing the flies away from your food.
4. Use Apple Cider Vinegar
Make your own trap by filling an empty bottle or jar with a small amount of apple cider vinegar and then add a few pieces of fruit, if possible overripe or already rotting. For the cover, use a piece of paper as a funnel to prevent the flies from coming back out.
